Easy Easter Snacks & Crafts that focus on Christ

It’s Holy Week (aka Passion Week)! In our family, Easter is all about the sacrifice that Christ made for us. By His death, Christ redeemed the world and conquered sin and death. So when I was looking for crafts and snacks to celebrate Easter with Man Cub, I wanted things that focused on the real reason for Easter and not on candy or a giant egg laying rabbit. (Even as a kid the Easter bunny seemed bizarre. An egg laying mammal*? And why is it usually giant and pink? Does anyone else find that creepy? No, just me? Okay, moving on…) As Orthodox Christians, we go to as many of the 18 Holy Week services we can make (we are aiming for 10 in 8 days this year). They are beautiful and really focus our hearts on the miracle of Christ’s death and resurrection.

My criteria for snacks and crafts are:

  1. Must relate somehow to Holy Week or Easter.
  2. Must be simple & easy to assemble (partly because of the whole 18 services thing, and partly because mama is a bit lazy when it comes to crafts).
  3. Must be affordable- no fancy ingredients.

There are HUNDREDS of Easter ideas online. I spent a lot of time filtering them to present this list to you. So, without further adieu…

Peeps Nests

Before Christ’s death, He laments over Jerusalem and the people He loves so much:

Matthew 23:37-39 ESV “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

Find instructions for the Peeps Baskets at SheKnows.com. We will be making these for friends at church this year.

Palm Sunday Donkey & Coloring Pages

Okay, I know we passed up Palm Sunday already, but this Clothespin Donkey was too cute not to show you all! The Coloring Pages are a mix of religious and secular (Easter Bunny) images, but there are some really good ones on the page.

There you go! Have a blessed Holy Week. Don’t feel like you have to do all of them; just pick your favorites and go for it! Crafts and special snacks are a fun way to incorporate our faith into daily life with our kids. Have fun!

*Okay, I know that platypuses lay eggs, but they’re weird too. And yes, apparently platypuses is the correct plural and not platypi. Thus says Wikipedia, so it must be true. 🙂
